緯糸のことを「ヌキ」と呼ぶため、緯糸で柄合わせして織る絣のことを「ヌキ絣」と呼びます。レースの上をシャトルが往復運動することで、シャトルの中に装填した木管から絣糸が解き放たれて柄を構築していきます。図案1枚分の長さの緯糸が木管1本に巻かれているため、木管1本分が連続で織機は稼働します。緯糸がなくなったら、織機は停止するように設計されているため、織り職人は緯糸を常に交換しながら織り続けます。
