立絣は、異なる括りパターンの組み合わせで柄を作ります。基本的には１～６種類の括りパターンの組み合わせを考えます。設計図を作成し整経の段取りを考える過程で作りたい柄と整経ロスのバランスなどを図り、時には図案の変更を行います。矢絣の基本構造は１種類の括りパターンです。荒巻工程で柄をずらすことで矢絣模様を作ります。
