Kurume Kasuri was devised in the Edo period. It is no exaggeration to say that indigo dyeing is the root of Kurume Kasuri because most of the dyes at that time were indigo dyeing.
Kurume Kasuri is a yarn-dyed woven fabric, that is, it is woven after dyeing threads, so basically the indigo dyeing of Kurume Aya is “thread dyeing”. The warp or weft is dyed in a ring shape, which is called “kase dyeing”. Indigo is dyed blue by immersing the thread in indigo liquid and then contacting the air to oxidize it. Taking advantage of this property, we dyed the gradation by changing the part to be oxidized.
