Kurume Kasuri craftsmen have a hand-dyed technique called “Tsumami zome”.
This is a technique of hand-dying a part of the ikat part (white part) that has been dyed in Kukuri and dyed in dark blue and white. Since it is dyed by hand, it does not dye a wide area. The main reason is the problem of manufacturing cost, but we also consider the problem of fastness (degree of discoloration).
It seems that the technique of Tsumami zome has been established for a long time, but due to the changes of the times, the improvement has been repeated by the creative ingenuity of craftsmen, such as changes in dye types and post-treatment methods. Only a few craftsmen have inherited the Tsumami zome technique due to the decrease in the number of weaving factories.
