And I have been an intern here at Shimogawa Orimono for the last 2 1/2 months.
2. Interest in Japan
My interest in Japan grew bigger the older I got. I often miss Japan, my family and its lifestyle when I am in Germany. It is not only the food and rich culture, but also the small everyday things: Onsen, cooking with japanese ingredients, going to the supermarket is always fun. But also the Japanese asthetic with the attention to the smallest detail is what I like about Japan. Even a street sign can be super pleasing. I often find myself missing the respect for craftsmanship and the use of quality materials that are so valued in Japan.
3. Interest in Kasuri (traditional Japanese ikat weaving)
I first heard the term Ikat while studying Textile and Area Design at Weißensee Art School Berlin. I then remembered that we used to have Kasuri patterend Futon at home when I was a child and then it clicked that this is Kasuri.
I became very interested and especially drawn to its imperfection and beautiful blurriness.
4. Reason for visiting Shimokawa
I actually wanted to visit a Kasuri factory during my study, but because of Covid, that never happend. So years later I still couldnt stop thinking about Kasuri. I wanted to understand how Kasuri is made and learn more about it.
5. Daily Life During the Stay in Shimokawa (Impressions and Thoughts)
It was fascinating to observe the many steps involved in creating Kasuri fabric and to see you handle the yarn with such skilled hands. Your dedication to craftsmanship—working with care and intention—is truly inspiring. Every step is purposeful and focused on maintaining the highest quality.I also appreciated the openness of your workspace—not only in your willingness to experiment with new materials and methods but also in how generously you share your craft with others. I am very grateful for all the people I met through the Shimogawa community. It is always so nice to meet people with similar interests or passions for craftmanship. And the many excursions around Yame, seeing other different workshops, was so inspiring and that were only possible because of you.
6. Future Goals
I would love to create a Kasuri pattern, then I would like to play with the misaligned patterns and I would like to experiment with varying densities. I aim to design patterns with considering the final use of the fabric—for example, ensuring that the pattern’s scale fits the size of the finished product. So designing a pattern with knowing where it repeats and how often. I look very forward to that.

私の名前はアンナです。日本人とドイツ人のハーフで、ドイツのベルリンで生まれ育ちました。
そして、ここ2ヶ月半、下川織物でインターンとして働いています。
2. 日本への関心
年齢を重ねるにつれて、日本への関心はますます高まってきました。ドイツにいると、日本、家族、そして日本のライフスタイルが恋しくなることがよくあります。食べ物や豊かな文化だけでなく、温泉、日本の食材を使った料理、スーパーマーケットに行くことなど、日々の些細なことが好きです。そして、細部にまでこだわった日本の美意識も、私が日本を好きな理由です。街の標識一つとっても、とても魅力的です。日本でとても大切にされている職人技への敬意と上質な素材の使い方が、恋しく思えることがよくあります。
3. 絣（日本の伝統的な絣織り）への関心
私が「絣」という言葉を初めて聞いたのは、ベルリンのヴァイセンゼー美術学校でテキスタイルとエリアデザインを学んでいた時でした。子供の頃、家に絣柄の布団があったことを思い出し、これが絣だと確信しました。
その不完全さと美しいぼやけ具合に、とても興味を惹かれました。
4. 下川を訪れた理由
実は、在学中に絣工場を見学したかったのですが、コロナ禍で叶いませんでした。何年も経った今でも、絣のことが頭から離れません。絣がどのように作られているのか、もっと深く知りたいと思ったのです。
5. 下川滞在中の日常生活（印象と感想）
絣織物を作るための様々な工程を見学し、また、糸を熟練の手で扱う様子を見るのは、とても興味深い経験でした。丁寧に、そして意図を持って作業に取り組む、あなたの職人技には本当に感銘を受けました。すべての工程に目的があり、最高の品質を維持することに注力されています。また、あなたの仕事場のオープンさにも感銘を受けました。新しい素材や技法を試す意欲だけでなく、惜しみなく自分の作品を他の人と共有する姿勢も素晴らしいです。下川コミュニティを通して出会ったすべての人々に心から感謝しています。同じような興味や情熱を持つ人たちと出会えるのは、いつも素晴らしいことです。八女周辺を何度も訪れ、様々な工房を見学できたことは、本当に刺激的でした。それは、下川さんのおかげで実現できたことです。
6. 将来の目標
絣模様を作ってみたいですね。そして、その模様のズレ具合や、密度の異なるものを試してみたいです。最終的な生地の用途を考慮した模様デザインを目指しています。例えば、模様のスケールが完成品のサイズに合うようにするなどです。つまり、模様がどこでどのくらいの頻度で繰り返されるかを意識しながらデザインすることです。とても楽しみにしています。
アンナ・ノブコ さん
ベルリンからのインターンシップを受け入れたのは、今回で3回目になる。ベルリンとの不思議な縁が続いている。昨年、下川織物を訪問したのが彼女の双子の妹だったことから、今回のインターン受け入れにつながっている。ドイツ生まれドイツ育ちの彼女だが、日本に対する思いは深く、数年前から抱いていた想いを今回実現させたようだ。彼女にとっては「自分探し」のような今回の日本での長期滞在。その中でも下川織物で過ごすことを一番の目的としてくれたことは、私たちにとっても素晴らしい時間を共有させていただいた。彼女は、最後のお別れの挨拶で「No Good-bye」と言ってくれた。近い将来の再会を確信している。
